A bunion (also referred to as hallux valgus) if often described as a bump on side of the big toe as the great toe leans toward the second toe. Bunions are a progressive disorder that will slowly enlarge over time. Bunions are hereditary with foot biomechanics. Certain types of feet cause a muscle imbalance around the great toe joint leading to bone deformity.
As deformity gets bigger over time, symptoms can occur with pain, redness, soreness, and numbness. Shoes cause pain to bunions, but shoes do not cause the bunion deformity. In-office x-rays are required to diagnose the severity of the bunion deformity and the bone movements.
Conservative treatments include shoes, padding, orthotics, NSAIDs. However, because bunions are a bone deformity, the only cure is surgery. Multiple options are available. See Dr. Nowlin to discuss conservative and surgical options that are best for you.
