An ingrown toenail is a curved nail border that irritates the skin causing pain, swelling, redness, and infection. Multiple causes include heredity, trauma, improper trimming, shoe pressure, fungal toenail.
Sometimes initial treatment can be performed at home with trimming and filing. However, we discourage nail trimming with some medical conditions such as diabetes, nerve damage, or vascular disease. Avoid “bathroom surgery” as this may make the condition worse.
Office treatments may include trimming and antibiotics. Sometimes minor in-office procedures may be necessary to permanently remove painful toenail border. Call Dr. Nowlin to discuss the best option for you.
