ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Relief in Warrensburg, MO

There are many types of arthritis that affect the foot and ankle including: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, and fibromyalgia. The most common is osteoarthritis. This is a wear-and-tear arthritis that damages the joint surfaces over time from repetitive stress. This joint damage can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased joint movement. Some people may develop an arthritic bone spur or protrusion. This spur can be painful with pressure and can cause irritation to nearby soft tissue structures such as tendons and nerves. Arthritis is common in the great toe joint (hallux rigidus), mid-foot joints, and ankle joint.

X-rays are usually necessary to diagnose severity of arthritis. Nonsurgical treatment to relieve symptoms can include: arch supports (orthotics), ankle brace, shoes, medications, injections, and physical therapy. Surgery may be needed to resolve symptoms of painful joint or painful bone spur. Surgery options depend on joints involved in the foot and ankle, bone health, age, and general health. See Dr. Nowlin for discussion of treatment options.
