Diabetes can cause nerve damage with numbness, decreased circulation, and a decreased immune system. These conditions can lead to a sore you can’t feel, a sore that doesn’t heal well, and a sore more prone to infection. These snowballing events can lead to ulcers, infections, and amputations. Dr. Nowlin is trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat diabetic foot complications.

Guidelines to Avoid Foot Complications

  • Inspect feet daily. Look for sores, redness, swelling. Use a mirror to inspect the bottom of the foot. See Dr. Nowlin immediately if you notice any foot changes even if it does not hurt.
  • Wear good shoes. Shoes can be helpful or hurtful. You may qualify for Medicare Diabetic Shoe Program. See Dr. Nowlin for evaluation.
  • Lukewarm water only for bathing or foot soaks. Numb feet may not recognize the water is too hot and may burn skin.
  • Lotion to feet but not between the toes.
  • Cut nails carefully. See Dr. Nowlin if you have any trouble performing this at home.
  • Never treat corns or calluses at home. No cutting or medicated pads.
  • Never walk barefoot even in the house. Skin damage can easily occur causing complications.
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking causes decreased circulation to toes.
  • Control diabetes. See your diabetic doctor regularly.
  • Get regular foot exams by Dr. Nowlin.
